United for Freeport

Election Day April 4

Candidate for School Board

Martha Furst

Martha is a native Freeporter and a 1980 graduate of Freeport High School.  She received her BA from Yale University and her MBA from Northwestern University.  She returned to Freeport in 1996 to work at Furst McNess Company, where she served as Vice President, CEO, and Vice Chairman over 25 years.  She retired from McNess in 2021.

Martha is currently Vice President of the Freeport School District #145 Board of Education.  She currently serves on the Finance and Equity Committees.  She has participated as a delegate in the Illinois School Board Association’s annual assembly.    Martha is the fourth generation of her family to serve on the FSD #145 Board of Education.

Martha has worked with a number of other community organizations, including Grace Episcopal Church, Boys and Girls Club of Stephenson County, and City of Freeport Water and Sewer Commission.

She currently tutors and mentors at Blackhawk Grade School.  She also has had a Little Sister who she was paired with eight years ago through Big Brothers Big Sisters.

My priorities for this position are:

  • I want to continue the good work of fostering a culture of support and accountability for all staff and students of the district, to see each person realize their full potential, while overseeing taxpayer dollars.
  • A community is only as good as its public schools. And the public schools are only as good as their community.  We need to move forward together.
  • I am proud of my public school education and want each and every student to benefit equitably from an outstanding experience that will prepare them for success in further education and employment after they graduate.
